Antimachia and surroundings

The excavations of the ancient city of Alasarna are located just west of Kardamena on the south coast of Kos. In antiquity, Alasarna was a major center of the island. Remains of these times include an apollo temple and a theatre. Even in Byzantine times, the city was still an important trading place, the most important remains of this time are four early Christian basilicas including the Basilica of St. Theotitas.

Mastichári (gr .: Μαστιχάρι) is located approximately at the height of Antimachia up on the north coast of Kos. The small village with about 500 inhabitants used to live mainly from fishing, today it is also important as a port for the ferry service to the island of Kalymnos. The shortest connection and therefore the fastest ferry connection to the neighboring island starts from the port of Mastichári, ferries depart from here several times a day.

Kardamena, also Kardamaina, the only larger town at the south coast of Kos, was once a small fishing village and today is a more or less pure tourist destination focusing on simple package tourism. But with a bit of effort, there are also interesting corners to find as well as pleasant bars and restaurants in Kardamena. The harbor is also worth a look.
