Casa Romana, the Roman house, is the reconstruction of a Roman villa on its original remains. The building, which is unremarkable from the outside, is located on the road Leoforos Grigoriou V in the immediate vicinity of the western excavation field and the Roman Odeon of Kos, opposite the Altar of Dionysus. The building stands on the site and on the original foundations of a Roman villa of the ancient city that belonged to a rich, aristocratic family.
The ancient villa was very centrally located, the western spas was reachable over the Decumanus Maximus quickly, in northern direction the Agorá, the market place, was not far away.
During the Hellenistic period, there were three houses on the site of the later Roman villa, with courtyards typical for the time. Remains of the walls of these predecessor buildings can still be seen in the lower sections of the exterior walls of the building. In Roman times, the three houses were converted into a luxurious residence, which now included the entire block. With 37 rooms and an area of 2300 square meters, it had considerable dimensions and is the largest known Roman villa in Greece.
Like the other excavations, the remains of the villa became visible after the earthquake of 1933 and were excavated by Italian archaeologists. Subsequently, Casa Romana was reconstructed to the now shown condition based on the findings.
