The altar of Dionysus is a small excavation site showing the remains of a Dionysian temple from the 2nd Century BC. The Hellenistic altar has a pi-shaped design and features a flat access ramp on the fourth side instead of the usual staircase. On the perimeter wall was a frieze with a Dionysian theme.
Largely destroyed during a heavy earthquake in 142 BC BC, the altar was later rebuilt. In Byzantine times the now unused altar fell into ruins. Parts were reused during the construction of the Neratzia Fortress, for example the frieze is installed there today. The archaeological site is located diagonally opposite the Roman House (Casa Romana) a little below the current street level. It is freely accessible.
