The Moritzburg is a fortified castle in Halle (Saale). The castle, built in the late Gothic style, was built as the residence of the Archbishops of Magdeburg. Archbishop Ernst personally laid the foundation stone in 1484. Today, the Moritzburg, which since 1904 has primarily and exclusively housed an art museum with national appeal, is one of the most imposing buildings in Halle.
From 2005 to December 2008, the north and west wings were remodeled and expanded by architects Enrique Sobejano and Fuensanta Nieto. A special feature is the roof construction. In 2010, the exhibition wing received the BDA architecture prize "Nike" in the category "best atmospheric effect".
