Astypalaia, also called Astypalea, was the first capital of Kos in ancient times. Most likely here was around 460 BC. Hippocrates of Kos was born. Sources contradict each other, but it is certain that the city was abandoned after a devastating earthquake (probably 413/412 BC). Replacing abandoned Astypalaia Isthmioton was built near Kefalos as a new capital, and around 366/365 BC. the capital moved to the place of Kos Town where it is still today.
The ruins of Astypalea were excavated in the time of Italian occupation and can be visited today. Much, however, is now overgrown by plants, and the place is to that easy to be found. Not much of the ancient splendor is visible today, but remains of the ancient theater are preserved, as are the remains of two temples.

How to get there
Astypalaia is located on the Kefalos peninsula in the west of the island of Kos, just south of Kefalos. Follow the road from Kefalos to the south and continue in the direction to Agios Ioannis. Shortly after Kefalos at a roundabout where there is also a road left down to the coast to Kamari continue straight ahead. After a few bends you come to an area looking like a small quarry, here you can park quite good. The access to the excavations can be found across the street through a normally open door.
