The ruins of the Basilica Àgios Stéfanos are located not far from Kefalos on a small promontory directly on the beach of Kampos on the bay of Kéfalos. These are the remains of an early Christian basilica built between 496 and 554 AD. Compared to other late antique church remains on Kos, the one of Àgios Stéfanos is the best preserved.
The basilica of Ágios Stéfanos was rediscovered in 1932 by Italian archaeologists, the ruin secured afterwards, some fallen pillars and some of the walls partially rebuilt. This makes it possible to recognize the original floor plan even today. Also preserved are some of the floor mosaics, but these are covered with gravel to protect against damage and thus are not visible.
Opposite the beach and the ruins is a picturesque small rocky island with the chapel Agios Nicolaos. The chapel is normally closed. The island is accessible by boat, and also for good and experienced swimmers, however, swimming to the island can be dangerous according to the locals.
