The Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers Market) is a covered market in the center of the city of Funchal in Madeira and one of the main attractions of the island. It is located in the heart of the historic center of Santa Maria and is well known for its countless tropical fruits and spices and its lively activity.
The market hall was built in the 1930s in a combination of the architectural styles Art Deco and Modernism. On the market there is a rich selection of products of the island such as fresh exotic fruits, vegetables and flowers, but also fish and meat. The covered market has two floors, on the lower there are the fish and meat stalls, on the upper one the stalls with tropical fruits, vegetables and spices. The main entrance as well as the interior are decorated with various tile paintings made in the once famous and now closed ceramic factory of Sacavém in Lisbon.
