Haidplatz is a square in the heart of Regensburg's old town. It is one of numerous squares in the city centre, with Rathausplatz and Kohlenmarkt to the east and Arnulfsplatz to the west. The emergence of this very old square was always closely connected with the development of the old town. Today it is a beautiful place to enjoy a few rays of sunshine.
The name of the Haidplatz comes from the Old High German word Heida for an area overgrown with bushes. It is assumed that one had formed outside the western wall of the Roman legionary camp of Castra Regina. The western gate of the camp, the Porta principalis Sinistra, was also located in this area.
Whether the square already existed at the time of the Roman legionary camp and served as a marketplace for the Roman civilian settlement, for example, is unknown, but it is certain that a main road ran from the legionary camp to the west via today's Haidplatz. Since the Middle Ages, the street over Haidplatz has developed into a main traffic road in an east-west direction.
From the Middle Ages, the square with representative buildings developed into a place to stay and accommodate high-class visitors and as a place for meetings, events and tournaments.
